Husband and wife Marta Herrero and Miguel Sanchez met 11 years ago while working at The Westin Palace, Madrid.

Growing up, Marta Herrero would often visit her uncle at his workplace, The Westin Palace, Madrid. ‘I always loved this hotel as a child and always imagined working here,’ she enthuses. In 2008, her dream came true when she got a job on reception. Concierge Miguel Sanchez had started two months previously and soon the pair began to spend their spare time together, visiting other Spanish cities such as Seville and San Sebastian with a group of colleagues who were mutual friends. The next step: dating. ‘We went to the cinema, the disco, museums and the mountains – we love trekking in the Sierra de Gredos mountains,’ she continues. ‘We have similar personalities and we laugh a lot when we’re together.’

"We are brainstorming about names and starting to learn about this amazing world of parenthood. It’s a new chapter in our lives."

‘I love that Marta is really compassionate,’ says Sanchez, who proposed in 2016 over a special dinner at home. The couple got married two years ago and celebrated with a big bash which was attended by more than 100 colleagues. ‘It felt like a work Christmas party because so many of our friends from the hotel came,’ jokes Herrero, revealing that leading up to the big day, Sanchez presented her with a video he made of favourite pictures of them as a couple. ‘I was crying because it was so nice to see the best moments of my life with him.’

On holidays and weekends away, they always stay in Marriott hotels – partly so they can experience them from a guest’s point of view. ‘Our favourite is the Hotel Maria Cristina, a Luxury Collection Hotel, San Sebastian because it’s right in the centre of San Sebastian, a city that we love for its food. The hotel is a good place to disconnect,’ says Sanchez. Their travelling will soon be temporarily put on hold, though, as Herrero is six months pregnant with their first baby – a girl. ‘Oof, we are brainstorming names and starting to learn about this amazing world of parenthood. It’s a new chapter in our lives,’ she concludes happily.
