Techno DJ Hector Murillo and his wife Michelle Hickey, a former dancer, met in Tokyo seven years ago.

‘Travel has always been our thing,’ says Mexican techno DJ Hector Murillo, who has played sets in some of the world’s biggest clubs. ‘Michelle was with me on tour for a few years and it’s always so much more fun staying in hotels with her. She’s the one who always pushes me to go to the pool and drink cocktails; she’s my best friend and keeps me grounded, despite all the crazy travelling I do.’ The pair met while working at a festival in Tokyo in 2012 – Murillo was one of the support DJs and Hickey was a dancer – and got to know each other on a night out at a saké bar with the rest of the performers. ‘I was living in Dublin and Hector was in Berlin, so he invited me to Paris for the weekend – that was our first proper date,’ recalls Hickey, who used to spend much of her time dancing at clubs Space and Amnesia in Ibiza. ‘I said that I would relocate to Berlin temporarily to see where we would go. And we’re still together, though we’ve ended up living in Barcelona.’

"When Hector comes home from a tour, we make sure we have a dinner date night together. That’s our little routine."

Although the pair spent the first few years performing in different countries (‘we were lucky that we had similar lifestyles so if there was somewhere we wanted to travel to together, we could,’ she continues), Hickey now fits working with The Nanny Line (an online nanny agency) around looking after their daughter Nyah, aged three. ‘When Hector comes home from a tour, we make sure we have a dinner date night together. That’s our little routine. It’s good to remember that we’re not just parents, we’re also a couple.’ Right now, they are still on a high from their three-day summer wedding, held at a finca surrounded by vineyards, in Spain. ‘It was small and intimate. My mum and sisters helped me cook Mexican tacos on the first day, and my friend surprised me by bringing along his mariachi band,’ says Murillo. ‘On the third day, we had a barbecue by the pool. I was in shorts, our daughter was running around and we were all together with our family. It was a really special moment.’
