Elodie Grammont and Miguel Angel Borrás were studying at the Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB) but it wasn’t until they both went on a painting trip to Mallorca as part of their course (he was in the fifth year; she was in the second) that they met. ‘From first sight, I was in love,’ says Borrás of that first meeting. At the time, they were both seeing other people but within a couple of weeks they were single and began a relationship. However, it wasn’t smooth sailing: Borrás was an exchange student in the Netherlands for four months and then moved to Mallorca, during which time they broke up. ‘I was the one who didn’t have a clear idea of what I wanted. I had come out of a long relationship and I felt free. It took me a little time to realise that Elodie was the one.’
Husband and wife architects Elodie Grammont and Miguel Angel Borrás met 19 years ago at university.
"For me, Elodie has the energy of innocence. She believes that beauty is everywhere, and you only have to search for it. I like to make her smile; I think that is the greatest thing."
Now the couple are based in Barcelona, where they founded Miel Arquitectos together in 2008. ‘First, we learnt to live together; then we learnt to work together too,’ says Borrás. ‘We each have our own role: Elodie is more creative, whereas I always go to the building site and deal with the clients.’ With two daughters Lou, eight, and Candela, five, and a busy working life (in 2010 they also set up Barcelona Architecture Walks), they appreciate the chance to get away when they can. ‘Not having to clean up or cook dinner and having the space to really relax, that’s what I love about hotels. In everyday life you have responsibilities but in a hotel, suddenly you have a chance to really look at each other,’ he explains.
Conversation is important to the couple. ‘I love how Miguel always has something to say; the way he explains things is captivating,’ says Grammont. Borrás continues: ‘Almost 19 years together and we never get bored; it’s incredible. For me, Elodie has the energy of innocence. She believes that beauty is everywhere, and you only have to search for it. I like to make her smile; I think that is the greatest thing.’
